Pacemaker Defibrillator

Guidant Corporation, which was acquired by Boston Scientific in April 2006, has issued a recall for several models of a pacemaker defibrillator that the company has been producing in recent years.

Although first making an attempt at a "silent recall" by claiming the desire to replace older model defibrillators with newer models, Guidant has since been forced by the FDA to make official recalls of defibrillator models found to be defective. The devices, which are designed to restore proper heart rhythms, were determined to be faulty long before the company made the news known to the public. In 2005, the death of a 21-year-old young man forced the issue and made the disclosure irreversibly necessary.

At least seven deaths have now been linked to the faulty defibrillators and with thousands of people continuing to go about their daily lives with the devices currently implanted, the numbers of those needing immediate medical help is sure to rise.

Recalls in June 2005 and June 2006, have steadily increased the number of models needed to be replaced for potentially deadly malfunctions. The issues involved surround two problems that are considered potentially harmful and are defects in the recalled defibrillators. They are a wiring defect and a memory problem, respectively. Either defect leaves the device woefully inadequate and incapable of meeting the needs of the patients who now trust the device on a daily basis.
