  • Personal Injury Attorneys Report $1 Billion Settlement for Defective Stryker Implants

stryker recall, stryker hip implant recallPhiladelphia personal injury attorneys at Messa & Associates report that Stryker, a major producer of artificial hip implants, has settled thousands of patient lawsuits involving their recalled all-metal hip devices in the amount of one billion dollars.

The deal is the one of the largest amounts paid in the past year to patients with injury claims as a result of defective metal-on-metal hip implants.

Last November, Depuy, Johnson & Johnson’s ortho subsidiary, paid nearly $2.5 billion to resolve about 8,000 lawsuits filed by patients who were also injured by metal-on-metal hip implant components that have since been recalled.

At one time, metal-on-metal implants accounted for almost one out of every three hip implant devices used in the approximately 250,000 hip replacements performed annually in the United States. Most of the models have been recalled and use of others abandoned due to chromium and cobalt poisoning that occurs within the blood of the implant recipient after the metal pieces rub together, releasing metal fragments into the bloodstream.

The Stryker settlement effects patients who received the Rejuvenate Modular-Neck or the ABG II Modular-Neck and who underwent operations to have the implant replaced – both models were recalled in 2012.

After the abandonment of all metal-on-metal implants, orthopeadic surgeons have returned to using devices that are made of mixed materials, like plastic and metal.
