Blue Bell Creameries<\/strong> and Jeni\u2019s Splendid Ice Creams<\/strong> have both voluntarily recalled all of their products due to possible contamination by Listeria Monocytogenes which can cause listeriosis. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration <\/a>(FDA) and Center for Disease Control <\/a>(CDC) have been monitoring this ice cream recall\u00a0and are currently conducting tests to insure the safety of all products.<\/p>\n

Blue Bell Creameries<\/strong>, based in Brenham, Texas, issued the first round of recall of single serving Chocolate Chip Country Cookie Sandwich and the Great Divide Bar<\/strong> ice cream products on March 13, 2015<\/strong>.\u00a0 Joint testing was done by the FDA, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry, South Carolina Department of Health & Environmental Control and the Texas Department of State Health Services at three separate production facilities in Brenham, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Sylacuaga, Alabama.\u00a0 The testing showed the existence of listeria monocytogenes in Blue Bell products however environmental sampling had not shown the bacteria\u2019s presence on food contact surfaces in any of the Blue Bell facilities. On March 23, 2015<\/strong> a second recall was issued for three flavors of 3 oz. institutional\/food service ice cream cups<\/strong>– Chocolate (SKU#453), Strawberry (SKU#452), and Vanilla (SKU#451). The products, unlike those included in the previous recall, were sold exclusively to schools, nursing homes and hospitals- all locations where listeriosis can have the most severe affects. On April 3, 2015<\/strong> the company announced the voluntary shutting down of the Broken Arrow, OK plant<\/strong> until the source of the bacteria could be found and neutralized. Just a few short days later on April 7, 2015 the recall was reissued to include all products that were manufactured on the same production line as those that showed the presence of listeria monocytogenes.\u00a0 On April 20, 2015<\/strong> the recall was once again expanded to include all products<\/strong> currently on the market which can be found in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wyoming and several international locations.<\/p>\n

Like its larger counterpart, Jeni\u2019s Splendid Ice Creams<\/strong> of Columbus, Ohio is ceasing all sales and closing all scoop shops<\/strong> until all products are ensured to be 100% free of listeria monocytogenes. The company\u2019s frozen yogurts, sorbets, and ice cream sandwiches were distributed in the United States to retail outlets including food service account and grocery stores as well as online at jenis.com.
