A massive recall of self-balancing scooters (also known as hoverboards) has been declared\u00a0due to the risk of fire. Over 500,000 units are included in this recall and includes multiple brands and models. The self-balancing scooters\u00a0have two wheels at either end of a platform and are powered by lithium-ion battery packs.<\/p>\n

The lithium-ion battery packs can overheat, posing a risk of the products catching fire, smoking, and\/or exploding. There have been at least 99 reported incidents of the battery packs overheating, smoking, sparking, catching fire and\/or exploding. There have been at least 16 reports of burn injuries as well as reports of severe property damage.<\/p>\n

The affected scooters were sold at mass merchandisers nationwide and at online retailers from June 2015 through May 2016 for between $350 and $900.<\/p>\n

Consumers are urged to stop using the scooters immediately and contact the manufacturer or retailer for a refund.<\/p>\n

There have been six incidents reported of sparks, overheating and short circuits with the recalled hoverboards. No injuries and property damage have been reported.<\/p>\n
