{"id":797,"date":"2017-04-21T16:43:22","date_gmt":"2017-04-21T19:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.messalaw.com\/recall\/?p=797"},"modified":"2017-04-21T16:43:22","modified_gmt":"2017-04-21T19:43:22","slug":"fda-issues-warning-abbott-laboratories-regarding-manufacturing-flaws-several-cardiovascular-devices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.messalaw.com\/recall\/fda-issues-warning-abbott-laboratories-regarding-manufacturing-flaws-several-cardiovascular-devices\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA issues warning to Abbott Laboratories regarding manufacturing flaws of several cardiovascular devices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.messalaw.com\/recall\/wp-content\/uploads\/abbott-1024x536.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.messalaw.com\/recall\/wp-content\/uploads\/abbott-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.messalaw.com\/recall\/wp-content\/uploads\/abbott-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.messalaw.com\/recall\/wp-content\/uploads\/abbott-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.messalaw.com\/recall\/wp-content\/uploads\/abbott.jpg 1910w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>On April 12, 2017, Abbott Laboratories received a letter from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration <\/a> warning them about manufacturing flaws regarding several cardiovascular devices acquired through their January 2017 purchase of St. Jude Medical for $25 billion. <\/p>\n<p>The FDA stated that the company failed to disclose at least one death that was associated with one of the defective cardiovascular devices and that an inspection in a California facility raised troubling questions about the safety of several defibrillators and portable heart monitors. <\/p>\n<p>The inspection uncovered dangerous leaking of lithium batteries in a number of devices and a serious underestimation of the occurrence of the dangerous situation. <\/p>\n<p>Abbott released a statement claiming a &#8220;strong history and commitment to product safety and quality.&#8221;  The company also stated that the inspection took place in February and that the issues raised were addressed in a March 13th letter to the FDA which described all corrective actions taken. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We take these matters seriously, continue to make progress on our corrective actions, will closely review FDA&#8217;s warning letter, and are committed to fully addressing FDA&#8217;s concerns,&#8221; the company said.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA stated that Abbott failed to provide evidence that the corrective actions they claimed to implement were actually implemented. <\/p>\n<h2>Affected Devices<\/h2>\n<p>The devices affected by the leakin lithium batteries &#8211; implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Defibrillators (CRT-Ds) &#8211; help regulate heart rhythms.<\/p>\n<p>In October, before they were acquired by Abbott Laboratories, St. Jude said it would recall certain devices due to battery failure caused by lithium leakage.
