Kidde Recall of Over 4.6 Million Disposable Fire Extinguishers

02/17/2015 By Kathleen Britt Leave a Comment

It was reported on February 12, 2015 by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) that 31 models of Kidde disposable fire extinguishers are being recalled. The personal injury attorneys of Messa & Associates, P.C. have learned that a faulty valve component can cause the disposable fire extinguishers to not discharge fully after repeated pressing and releasing posing a risk of injury.

Walter Kidde Portable Equipment Company Inc., of Mebane, North Carolina, is recalling approximately 4.6 million disposable fire extinguishers in the United States and 175,000 in Canada. In total there are thirty-one (31) models that fall within the Kidde recall that were manufactured in Mexico from July 23, 2013 through October 15, 2014. According to reports, there were 11 instances where fire extinguishers failed to discharge as expected. Luckily, no injuries have been reported. The Kidde disposable fire extinguishers were distributed from August 2013 through November 2014 at Home Depot, Walmart, Menards and other hardware, department, and home stores throughout the country. The price of the extinguishers ranged from $18 to $65 for the majority of models and up to $200 for a larger model.

All of the 31 models of Kidde disposable fire extinguishers that are being recalled have a Zytel® black plastic valve. They are red, white or silver and have either an ABC or BC rating which can be found to the right of the nameplate. A 10 digit date code is stamped on the side of the cylinder in which digits five through nine represent the day and year of manufacture in DDDYY format.  Dates codes for recalled units manufactured in 2013 are XXXX 20413 X through XXXX 36513 X and 2014 are XXXX 00114 X through XXXX 28814 X. The following model numbers, which can be found on a name plate on the front of the product, are included in the Kidde disposable fire extinguishers recall:
