The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Thursday that JBS Tolleson, Inc., Arizona based meat producer, has issued a recall of nearly seven million pounds of “various raw, non-intact beef products” due to a salmonella outbreak. The recall was issued after JBS was identified as a common supplier of raw ground beef products that were discovered to be the likely source of 57 salmonella illnesses reported between August 5th and September 6th. The seven million pounds of recalled beef are believed to be potentially contaminated with salmonella bacteria.
Recalled products were packaged between July 26th and September 7th and sold nationwide under Walmart, Cedar River Farms Natural Beef, and Showcase brand names.
Symptoms of Salmonella
Salmonella symptoms generally appear 12-72 hours after ingestion of contaminated food or water. These symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever that can last anywhere from four to seven days. Most people can recover on their own, but some may need to be hospitalized if experiencing persistent diarrhea.
Those with the highest risk of severe illness include babies, the elderly, or anyone with a weakened immune system.
Next Steps
In a statement, FSIS urged consumers to throw away or return any frozen JBS beef products in their freezers.
“FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
FSIS also reminded consumers to properly cook beef to the proper temperature required to kill harmful bacteria.
“The only way to confirm that ground beef or other cuts of beef are cooked to a temperature high enough to kill harmful bacteria is to use a food thermometer that measures internal temperature.”
