Ford, Toyota recall over 3M vehicles due to fire hazards

09/07/2018 By Angela Leone Leave a Comment

Ford and Toyota have issued massive recalls of over three million total vehicles due to fire hazards.

Toyota Recall

Toyota’s recall affects over one million Prius and C-HR models. In a statement, the Japanese automaker explained that an engine wire harness connected to the power control unit is at risk of wear over time which could lead to a short circuit or a fire. All current generation Prius’ are included in the recall, including a plug-in variation, and the hybrid version of the C-HR manufactured until May 2018.

Toyota will begin mailing recall notices to car owners later this month.

There has been one reported case of a vehicle emitting smoke, but no injuries have been reported.

Ford Recall

Ford, in response to pressure from federal safety regulators, is recalling about two million F-150 pickup trucks because the seat belts have the potential to catch fire.

The recall includes trucks manufactured from 2015 to 2018. According to Ford, mechanisms within the seat belt called pretensioners can generate excessive sparks when tightening. These sparks can ignite gases inside a support pillar between the front and back seats, causing insulation and carpet to catch fire.

The pretensioners were made by ZF-TRW and the now defunct Takata, who notoriously manufactured airbags that are linked to 24 deaths and over 240 injuries worldwide.

Affected owners will be notified starting September 24th of the recall and dealers will be perform repairs for free.

Ford has received 23 reports of smoke or fire in the pickups but has received no reports of injury.
