Apple Inc. has issued a voluntary recall for Beats Pill XL portable wireless speakers due to a fire hazard. The Cupertino, California based tech company announced through the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) that the affected batteries can overheat, risking potential personal and property damage.

The Beats Pill XL recall involves all portable, wireless speakers in both the United States and Canada that were sold between January 2014 and June 2015.  An estimated 222,000 units are believed to possess the defective battery.  The plastic capsule shaped speakers were manufactured in China, stand approximately 4 inches tall, are 13 inches long, and were sold in black, white, pink, metallic sky, and titanium at Apple Retail Stores and other major retail stores nationwide.  The portable speakers were also available online at Apple.com and Beatsbydre.com.

Eight incidents have been reported associated with the overheating of the portable speaker. In one situation the consumers hand was burnt and another resulted in property damage. According to the Beats Pill XL recall, consumers should immediately stop using the product.  Apple is offering store credit or a refund of $325.
