In January 2015 Philadelphia personal injury attorneys learned via the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of an IKEA recall involving crib mattresses due to an entrapment hazard to infants. As of May 5, 2015 the recall has expanded to include approximately 170,000 SULTAN crib mattresses in the United States and Canada.  Just a week later on May 12, 2015 the CPSC reported a recall of approximately 75,000 pressure mounted safety gates across the United States and Canada due to the potential of both a fall and tripping hazard.

The expanded recall focuses on SULTAN crib mattresses sold at IKEA stores nationwide and online from October 2000 to May 2014. Manufactured In Mexico, Poland, China and the United States and imported by IKEA North America Services LLC, of Conshohocken, PA, the mattresses range in price from about $20 to $100. It is reported that a gap could be created between the mattress and crib end larger than the width of two fingers, the standard for indicating a defective product.

In addition to the expanded mattress recall, IKEA is also recalling nearly 75,000 PATRULL KLÄMMA and PATRULL SMIDIG pressure mounted safety gates.  The CPSC is reporting insufficient friction between the wall and gate is not holding the product in its intended position. These white, steel and plastic gates stand about 29 inches high and have an adjustable width from 29-34 inches. In addition to the fall hazard, it is believed that the bar at the bottom of the product can also pose a tripping hazard. The affected products were sold online and in stores from August 1995 to February 2015 for about $35. Worldwide there have been a report 18 incidents with injury include three that led to children being injured as a result of falling down the stairs.

IKEA is offering full refunds for all products included in these recalls. If you are not sure if your purchases are included in this recall look for these identifying markers  found on stickers on the bottom of the safety gate.  Consumers can bring the products to the store directly or call toll-free (888)966-4532 for more information.
