Although an official recall has not be released, the personal injury attorneys of Messa and Associates were recently made aware of a report issued by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) involving a listeria outbreak and felt it was important to spread the news. According to the reports, as of December 18, 2014 there have been 28 people across the United States that have become infected with Listeria monocytogenes, also known as listeriosis, which can cause severe, life threatening illness.
It appears that the outbreak has spread through commercially produced, prepackaged caramel apples however a specific brand has not been pinpointed. Due to this, the CDC is strongly urging people to not consume ANY prepackaged caramel apples regardless of whether they contain nuts, sprinkles or other toppings.
Of the 28 people infected with listeria 26 were hospitalized across 10 states and there were a reported 5 deaths. Nine of the affected were pregnancy related meaning it occurred in a pregnant woman or her newborn child. Three of those that fell ill were children between the ages of 5 and 15.
The CDC, in partnership with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working vigorously to identify the cause of the outbreak and will make that information available as soon as possible. They do emphasis that there have been no reports of related illnesses due to apples that were not covered in caramel or prepackaged.
