3M Corporation Hit with a $110 Million Verdict for Defective Earplugs
On the evening of Thursday, January 27th, 2022 two plaintiffs were awarded $55 Million each, this is the largest verdict since the lawsuit began. Both victims were awarded $15 million in compensatory damages and $40 million in punitive damages.
3M’s dual-ended combat earplugs were found to be defective and caused hundreds of thousands of service members hearing loss, hearing damage, or tinnitus.
Thursday’s trial was the 11th bellwether involving the 3M earplugs. Bellwether trials are the first cases to be tried in a mass tort and are utilized by the court to evaluate the viability and values of the cases.
In the previous ten bellwether 3M trials over the past year, the majority of the verdicts have been in favor of the plaintiffs/injured soldiers.
