Twenty-five thousand lawsuits were settled this week between Bayer and Janssen pharmaceutical companies, and patients alleging that they were not adequately warned about the risks of life-altering complications regarding blood thinner medication, Xarelto.
Lawsuits dating back to 2014, which were consolidated in federal court in New Orleans, involved claims that patients were not adequately informed of the risks of life-threatening complications associated with Xarelto including internal bleeding, stroke, and death. Attorneys for the plaintiffs called the settlement a “fair and just resolution,” while a spokeswoman for Janssen reminded that the settlement included, “no admission of liability.”
In their statement, plaintiffs’ attorneys also said that in addition to addressing lawsuits that are already a part of the multi-district litigation, the settlement agreement resolves claims filed by April 4th. Currently, there is no estimate on how much each individual plaintiff will receive, but payments will be reduced for those whole filed claims after December 1, 2015, and for those who first suferred a Xarelto-related injury on or after March 1, 2016.
