Yesterday, November 3, 2015, Pennsylvania voters went to the polls and elected judges to fill three empty seats on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. It was an historic election for the Commonwealth as this was the first time this many seats have been open on the Supreme Court.
Messa & Associates endorsed candidates Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty, and David Wecht for these elections because of their positions regarding civil justice and citizens’ rights to a trial-by-jury. Tort Reform is a current political movement aiming to place monetary caps on damages (specifically punitive) awarded to plaintiff’s in various types of personal injury lawsuits. Tort Reform also aims to place procedural limits on the process of filing and litigating claims in civil court. This kind of civil court reform is a threat to all citizens of Pennsylvania and across the nation.
For trial attorneys and citizens of Pennsylvania, it was imperative that Donohue, Dougherty, and Wecht be elected to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to ensure that the right to a trial and to fair compensation remained intact in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Luckily for all, Donohue, Dougherty, and Wecht were elected in a Democratic SWEEP in Tuesday’s elections. With 761,134 combined votes, the three judges defeated Republican candidates Anne Lazarus, Dwayne D. Woodruff, and John H. Foradora by 359,690 votes.
Messa & Associates Encourages Clients to Vote for Plaintiffs’ Rights
In the weeks leading up to the elections, Messa & Associates acted in an unusual way; Messa & Associates actively encouraged current and former clients to vote the democratic judges into the Supreme Court. Through multiple Facebook posts and e-mail blasts, we educated and encouraged Pennsylvania voters on the necessity of voting in justices that will uphold their rights to justice in civil court. We are ecstatic that those efforts have helped lead to a 3-way victory for the Democratic judges.
Philadelphia Personal Injury Attorneys
As Philadelphia personal injury attorneys, we were concerned for the future of plaintiffs in civil court in Pennsylvania and acted on those concerns by bringing attention to the importance of this November’s elections. The outcome of the elections is a big win for every citizen in Pennsylvania, even those who did not vote for the winning judges. In life, we never know what is going to happen. Sometimes, professional negligence takes away something precious from our lives and we need civil court to help us put things back together.
