Messa & Associates organized a special assembly at Freire Charter Middle School in observance of National Fire Safety Month. Joe Messa, the firm’s founding attorney, and retired Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Harold B. Hairston, Sr. spoke with fifth and sixth grade students about fire safety.
The students learned the importance of having smoke detectors installed in their homes as well as the need for at least two exits in the event of an emergency. Mr. Hairston also highlighted to students that the main focus during a fire should be getting out and safely evacuating their family. Students were encouraged to ask questions and to share the information they learned with parents or guardians at home.
In the United States, there is a house fire reported every 90 seconds. House fires kill more people per year than all U.S. natural disasters combined. Common causes of fire can include daily activities like cooking and smoking, and common household items such as candles or space heaters.
Fire and Burn Injury Attorneys Provide Students with Photoelectric Smoke Detectors for Their Homes
In addition to talking to students at Freire about fire safety, Messa & Associates also presented students with smoke detectors to take home. The students received First Alert photoelectric smoke detectors along with other safety information. There are two different types of smoke detectors available. Ionization smoke detectors and photoelectric smoke detectors are both sold as smoke alarms, but ionization smoke detectors often fail to detect smoldering fires which account for 80 percent of all household fires.
Photoelectric smoke detectors are designed to detect slow-burning fires as well as the flash fires ionization smoke detectors specialize in handling. According to tests performed by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards, photoelectric smoke detectors provide two to three times more chance of escaping your home in a fire than ionization smoke detectors.
