The latest information on patients who received tainted injections of methylprednisolone acetate (MPA) has risen to 23 deaths and 285 illnesses in 16 states. New England Compounding Center (NECC) produced and distributed the tainted steroids responsible for a national meningitis outbreak.
The tainted steroids were used to treat chronic pain in patients who suffered from pain in their back and joints such as knees, shoulders, and hips. Patients who had back injections are at the highest risk for a fungal infection.
Meningitis Cases Spread to Pennsylvania, New Jersey
Cases of fungal meningitis have been reported in 16 states. Last week, Pennsylvania reported its first case of fungal meningitis. The patient reportedly received the tainted steroid injection in July at a medical clinic in Altoona and began feeling ill in early September. According to reports, the Altoona facility and another facility Allegheny County are the only two clinics in Pennsylvania to have received the suspect medication from NECC.
In New Jersey, 16 cases have been reported according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Officials say more than 600 patients in New Jersey received the tainted steroid injection at six facilities across the state between May and September. NECC issued a recall of the tainted steroids earlier this month.
