The National Highway Traffice Safety Administration has launched an investigation into multiple complaints regarding front passenger-side airbags in 2012 Jeep Liberties.
Forty-four reports from Jeep Liberty owners reference failures of the occupant restraint controller (ORC) system; an airbag warning light remains illuminated, presumably due to a malfunction in the ORC module that manages the front passenger-side airbag. NHTSA reports that the failure of this system can prevent the airbag from operating correctly in the event of a crash, which could potentially cause serious injuries and death.
Some of the complaints suggest that out of warranty vehicle owners were required to replace the faulty ORC system at their own cost, anywhere between $375 and $500. In many cases, owners simply chose not to have the system replaced.
“A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequence of the alleged defect,” the NHTSA says.
