Philadelphia personal injury attorneys say that complaints related to Essure continue to grow as at least 850 women and doctors have filed reports with the Food and Drug Administration about issues they have been experienced. Essure is a permanent form of birth control where bendable coils are placed into the fallopian tubes, passed from the vagina through the cervix and uterus. Scar tissue then forms around the coils and blocks the tubes from insemination, according to marketing materials. The procedure is owned and marketed by Bayer.
According to the FDA, problems range from excessive bleeding, rashes and bloating to women who were forced to undergo hysterectomies to have their reproductive organs removed. In one report filed with the FDA on September 19, 2013, a physician described a patient who had the Essure coils implanted and later presented to the emergency room with abdominal pain. The report says that the results of a pelvic exam found the patient’s cervix, fallopian tubes and uterus to be necrotic and that the woman tested positive for a type of strep infection. She later passed away after going into renal failure. The report indicated that the doctor thought her death was caused by a streptococcus infection (streptococcal toxic shock syndrome).
Personal Injury Attorneys Say Women Have Come Together on Facebook to Discuss the Essure Procedure, Complications
Thousands of women have joined a group on Facebook to discuss their struggles with Bayer’s birth control. The procedure, which gained FDA approval in 2002, was marketed to all of them as a cheaper, easier and safer alternative to tubal ligation. However, an steadily increasing number of women now have painful stories to share about the effects Essure birth control has had on their lives.
In most cases, the women describe symptoms including severe abdominal pain, excessive bloating, painful headaches and skin rashes. Many of them have required additional surgeries to have the coils removed after they perforate their fallopian tubes or migrate to another part of their bodies. For all of the women looking to gain the support of one another, Essure certainly has not been a cheaper, easier or safer alternative considering their experiences afterwards.
