Philadelphia personal injury attorneys recently learned that Johnson & Johnson’s ortho unit, Depuy Synthes, is recalling its jaw implant system, the Craniomaxillofacial Distraction System, due to increased occurrences of serious injury.

The device, used to lengthen and stabilize the lower jaw, is used on patients with birth or post-trauma defects. A potentially deadly design flaw is the cause of the recall which the FDA has labeled as Class I – a designation reserved for “situations in which there is a reasonable probability that use of these products will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” The FDA also noted, “This could lead to respiratory arrest, and result in death.” Infants are at the highest risk of injury, says the FDA, as device failure can lead to tracheal obstruction.

DePuy Synthes issued an urgent recall notice in April of this year, asking medical providers to remove the dangerous device from their inventories. The units recalled were manufactured between April 2009 and April 2011. They were distributed until April 2014.
