A new study conducted by researchers from the Society of Automotive Engineers says failure to use turn signals is one of the leading causes of car accidents. According to the study, failure to use turn signals causes nearly two million motor vehicle accidents each year. That number is more than double the number of car accidents caused by distracted driving. Personal injury attorneys urge drivers to pay attention to this startling fact and be more attentive to their own turn signals.
Researchers reported that drivers across the country fail to use their turn signals nearly half of the time when changing lanes and fail to signal a quarter of the time when making a turn. This common practice increases the risks of car accidents because other drivers are not aware of what someone who is not using a turn signal may be doing.
Other common causes of motor vehicle accidents are speeding, driving under the influence, driver fatigue, poor weather conditions, aggressive driving and distracted driving which includes texting, talking on a mobile phone and adjusting the radio.
*Caution: If conditions are unsafe and you feel you could be hurt by oncoming traffic or otherwise, do not risk your safety for pictures or other evidence.
