  • Manufacturer Settles Vaginal Mesh Lawsuits for $830M

Philadelphia personal injury attorneys have reported often about defective vaginal mesh implants that leave recipients with organ damage, pelvic injuries, incontinence, and other negative results. Recently, Johnson and Johnson subsidiary Ethicon planned to stop selling four of it’s mesh models, and Johnson and Johnson paid millions to settle lawsuits concerning defective vaginal mesh.

On April 30th, 2014, Endo Health Solutions, Inc. agreed to pay $830 million to settle 20,000 lawsuits from women who claim mesh implants caused them organ damage and made sex painful. Endo’s subsidiary, American Medical Systems (AMS) faces an additional 5,000 claims regarding harmful vaginal mesh implants, and last year, Endo paid over $54 million to settle an undisclosed number of vaginal mesh lawsuits.

Fittingly, but perhaps a bit late, The United States Food and Drug Administration has declared that future manufacturers of vaginal mesh inserts will be subject to stricter safety guidelines, considering the high risk they pose.

Vaginal mesh implants are medical devices woven from filaments of polypropylene and/or other non-biological substances that are designed and intended to be permanently implanted through surgery into the human body. They are used in the treatment of conditions in the female pelvis, primarily pelvic organ prolapse and/or stress urinary incontinence.

Philadelphia Personal Injury Attorneys at Messa & Associates File Vaginal Mesh Lawsuits

Philadelphia personal injury attorney, Eric H. Weitz, recently filed over 20 lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon and Boston Scientific for plaintiffs suffering the damaging effects of defective vaginal mesh implants. Also named in the lawsuits are the manufacturers of the mesh components that made up the defective mesh implants. The complaints claim that contrary to the Defendants’ representations and marketing to the medical community and to the patients themselves, their pelvic mesh products have high failure, injury, and complication rates, fail to perform as intended, require frequent and often debilitating reoperations, and have caused severe and irreversible injuries, conditions, and damage to a significant number of women.
