Personal injury lawyers learned today that a SEPTA bus accident left one woman dead and about 12 other people injured Monday night in the Ogontz section of Philadelphia. The accident occurred when a Route 55 SEPTA bus and an Acura collided on Old York Road after the car veered into the next lane and hit the bus head on.
Police are still investigating the accident but say that the front-side passenger, 58-year-old Yvonne Scott, died at the scene. The driver of the Acura, a 31-year-old woman, was taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center where she remains critical condition with broken bones and severe internal injuries. In addition to the 2 passengers in the Acura, the SEPTA bus driver and 10 other passengers were taken to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries.
Personal Injury Lawyers: Alcohol May Have Been a Factor in SEPTA Bus Accident that Killed a Woman, Injured Others
According to investigators, the driver of the vehicle may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. In addition to a strong smell of alcohol coming from the car, police also noted open containers of alcohol inside of the vehicle. Witnesses say the woman was driving in the wrong lane when her car collided with the bus.
There have not been any reports of where the women were coming from or where they may have been headed at this time. However, many states do enforce liquor liability laws. In Pennsylvania, places of business as well as private events where alcohol is served can be held liable for someone who is already visibly intoxicated then later gets into an accident that injures themselves or others. The attorneys at Messa & Associates has handled a number of alcohol related injury cases and successfully won verdicts and settlements for our clients in those cases.
