  • Sports Supplement Recalled Following Death, Reports of Liver Damage

Philadelphia personal injury lawyers announce that USPlabs will recall some of its OxyElite Pro sports supplement products. The supplements, used for weight loss, have been linked to an outbreak of liver illnesses and one death. The recall covers select packages of OxyElite Pro Super Thermo capsules, OxyElite Pro Ultra-Intense Thermo capsules and OxyElite Super Thermo Powder.

The Food and Drug Administration had notified UPSlabs via letter that it would put an order in place to halt distribution of OxyElite if they did not recall the product. The agency said it would also notify distributors and retailers of OxyElite to stop selling the supplements of they were not recalled. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 56 cases of liver illnesses since April 1 linked to OxyElite Pro. Most of the cases identified were in Hawaii after the liver transplant center there noticed a pattern of severe hepatitis among otherwise healthy people.

Personal Injury Lawyers Concerned about Use of Aegeline in Supplements

Last month, the FDA told USPlabs that its OxyElite Pro as well as another one of its supplements, VERSA-1, was considered to be tainted because the products include an ingredient called aegeline. USPlabs disagreed with that finding in a letter to FDA, but said it would stop using the ingredient in the United States and agreed to research a new formula for its products.

Aegeline, a compound found in an Asian tree, lacks a history of use or other evidence of safety in the United States before 1994, a key regulatory date for grandfathering supplements.
