Philadelphia personal injury lawyers recently learned that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported last Friday that India based pharmaceutical company Zydus Cadila has recalled 10,200 bottles of an allergy medication in the United States after high blood pressure medication was found in one of the lot’s bottles.
The recall was voluntarily issued by the company’s United States unit, Zydus Pharmaceuticals USA Inc., on May 8th. A high blood pressure medication known as atenolol was found inside a bottle containing promethazine hydrochloride, a common treatment for allergic reactions like nausea, vomiting, and difficulty sleeping. The drug is also used as a pre-op sedative. A spokewoman for the company called the voluntary recall a “precautionary measure.”
The FDA classified the recall as Class II, stating that exposure to the recalled product may cause temporary and/or reversible adverse health consequences.
Personal Injury Lawyers: Drug Recalls Not Uncommon
Personal injury attorneys know that pharmaceutical recalls are quite common, but Zydus issued the SEVENTH drug recall this year by Indian pharma, following Wockhardt Ltd, Lupin Ltd, Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd, Ranbaxy Laboratories Lrd, and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd. The increasing numbers of recalls are likely due to tighter restrictions places on Indian Pharmaceutical companies by the FDA after they discovered lapses in quality controls.
