Philadelphia personal injury lawyers report news of a home explosion in South Philadelphia Monday. Reports indicate that a two-story rowhome exploded, injuring nine people, including a contractor working alone in the vacant home at 428 Daly St. The man suffered severe burn injuries after the house exploded as he tried to light a gas hot-water heater, according to fire officials and City Councilman Mark Squilla.

The home where the explosion occurred was reduced to a pile of bricks and two adjacent homes lost walls as a result. Parked cars were also crushed by the bricks and people from about 70 homes were displaced. Reports say the home belongs to a newly created real estate investment firm, SCK Investments L.L.C. The firm was set up to buy, rehabilitate, and resell neglected properties. Property records show permits were issued for the home on Daly Street in April for a major renovation, including the installation of a furnace and an air-conditioning system. A witness said she smelled gas about five minutes before the explosion.

Personal Injury Lawyers Concerned About Construction Safety in Philadelphia

As investigations into yesterday’s explosion continue, it has been discovered that the existing hot water tank likely played a role in the cause of the explosion and collapse of the rowhome. Reports say that the owner of the property hired contractors to renovate the home. A bidding document for the renovations indicates that the contractor would be responsible for “obtaining all city permits in connection with this project.”

The explosion was an unwelcomed reminder of the deadly building collapse on Market Street last month. That collapse happened on a construction site in Center City Philadelphia as a construction crew worked to demolish a building. Six people were killed in the construction accident and 13 others injured. Officials determined that the site was not properly inspected, and later initiated additional investigations surrounding the collapse. Many of those investigations are still ongoing and several personal injury lawsuits are pending on behalf of the victims and their families.
