Philadelphia personal injury attorneys report that Stryker Orthopaedics has voluntarily recalled its Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck stems. Both devices are used to connect to artificial hips in hip replacement surgeries. At least 45 patients have reported injuries related to the devices, which can corrode while in place causing pain and tissue swelling.
Stryker recommended patients who received a Rejuvenate Modular or ABG II modular-neck stem and are suffering from symptoms of pain or swelling to seek advice from their surgeon. The medical device company and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are evaluating the reports of injuries. They began receiving complaints from patients in the early part of 2012.
Many medical device companies have had continuing issues with injuries to patients related to hip replacement devices. In addition to the recent recall by Stryker, Johnson & Johnson has also recalled several of its devices including the DePuy hip replacement and its ASR XL Acetabular Hip Replacement System. Zimmer Holdings has also recalled its Durom hip replacement device due to failure. Each of the devices manufactured by the companies have failed in many patients and caused additional injuries or the need for patients to undergo an additional surgery.
In some cases, the hip replacements are failing after only a year or two. Typically, implants should last approximately 15 to 20 years.
