  • Summer Time Grill Safety Tips from Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers

The Summer season is officially underway and many of us have already started swimming, playing, and barbecuing. Philadelphia personal injury attorneys would like to remind readers of the dangers of improper handling of barbecue grills so that no injuries come upon you or your loved ones this summer.

Philadelphia fire commissioner Lloyd Anders shares some useful safety information regarding grilling this summer.

  • Over the winter, insects and small animals can get into the grill. Sometimes, spiders spin webs that block or interrupt the gas connection. Make sure the grill is thoroughly inspected and cleaned before use.
  • For charcoal grills, make sure you are at least ten feet away from any window or door to avoid sending carbon monoxide fumes into the house. And NEVER used a charcoal grill in an enclosed area, again because of the dangers of carbon monoxide emissions.
  • Be sure to check for holes in hoses and potential propane gas leaks before connecting the gas and operating the grill.
  • Never use a grill that has been recalled
  • Clean the grill and grease trap often to reduce the risk of flare-ups and grease fires.
  • Never leave a grill unattended.

To prevent injuries to small children, instruct them to stay away, or use fabric covers for the grills when they are not in use to avoid meddling.
