The model elevator involved in the recall is the Elmira Hydraulic residential elevator, installed in large homes with multiple floors. The elevator is fitted with a manual accordion-style gate and a crushing hazard is imposed when the the machinery operates before the gate is fully closed. Three incidents have been reported regarding elevators functioning before the gate is closed, including one that resulted in a catastrophic brain injury to a young boy in Baltimore, MD.
