McDonald’s began distributing “STEP-iT” fitness trackers in their Happy Meals on August 9, 2016. By August 17th, the fast food giant had announced that they would be discontinuing the toys, and on August 23rd, they issued a voluntary recall of over 30 million units in the US and Canada.
The wristbands were intended to get kids up and moving, but instead, they left burns and blisters on the skin of the children who wore them. McDonald’s received over 70 reports of injuries, including seven reports of severe blisters.
McDonald’s is asking consumers to immediately remove the recalled wristbands from children’s possession and return them to any McDonald’s for a replacement toy and a free yogurt tube or bag of apple slices.
Consumers with further questions can contact McDonald’s by calling 800-244-6227 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT daily, or by visiting their dedicated online page.
