Nearly 17,000 Mini Cooper models recalled due to faulty brake lights

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly 17,000 Mini Coopers have been recalled by BMW of North America in response to a potential brake light malfunction.

Recalled vehicles include 2016 and 2017 models of the Mini Cooper Clubman, Cooper S Clubman, and JCW Clubman. When the cars brake with a turn signal on, the inner, bumper-mounted brake light will go out.

NHTSA warned drivers on their website, “If the brake light does not illuminate when a turn signal is activated, other drivers may be confused, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Dealers will reprogram the vehicles to correct brake lighting at no charge to car owners. The recall is scheduled to begin May 22nd. Concerned consumers can contact customer service at (215) 568-3500.
